Dr Andrew Barnes BSc, MSc, PhD

Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science

Summary

With a background in sports biomechanics, Andrew completed his PhD at Sheffield Hallam in the area of running injuries and biomechanical risk factors. As a fellow of the HEA, Andrew has nearly 10 years' experience of teaching in higher education and delivers a range of modules on both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. His main areas of teaching specialism include biomechanics and performance analysis. Andrew is an active researcher whose interests lie in the field of foot and ankle biomechanics, gait analysis, sports injury and performance analysis in rugby union.

About

Andrew studied for a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Bath before completing an MSc in Sports Biomechanics at Liverpool John Moores University. Andrew came to Sheffield Hallam to study for his PhD which he was awarded in 2012, entitled " Forefoot-rearfoot kinematics as risk factors in the development of tibial stress injuries? As a fellow of the HEA, Andrew has nearly 10 years' experience of teaching in higher education and delivers a range of modules on both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. His main areas of teaching specialism include clinical and sports biomechanics and performance analysis. Andrew has several years of supervisory experience having supervised projects from undergraduate through to doctoral level students.

Andrew is an active researcher whose interests lie in the field of foot and ankle biomechanics, gait analysis and sports injury. His current work is focussed on the development of a new design of running shoe and how field based gait retraining applications can be used to reduce injury risk in runners. As a keen rugby player, Andrew also has an interest in performance analysis and the study of key performance indicators to inform tactical approaches in elite Rugby Union.
