Dr Buddhadev Jana PhD, CEng, MIMMM, FHEA
Senior Lecturer in Materials Engineering
Summary
Dr. Jana, following a significant Industrial R&D experience, joined Ï㽶ÊÓƵ in 2015 as a lecturer in Materials Engineering and became a Senior Lecturer in Materials Engineering in 2018. He has research and consultancy interests in the field of tribo-corrosion, and metallurgy.
About
Dr Jana received his PhD in 2006 from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, where his PhD research involved modelling of the erosion-corrosion behaviour on metals and metallic coating systems. Prior to his PhD, he obtained his BEng (in 1999) and MS (in 2001) degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Bengal Engineering and Science University and Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur respectively. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a professional member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, UK.
From 2006 to 2015, he worked as a Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Metallurgist at Corus Group Plc in the UK, which was later on rebranded to Tata Steel Europe Limited. He worked for the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ and Development division (best known as the Swinden Technology Centre) of the company based in South Yorkshire. In the role Dr. Jana carried out research in both product development (plate, pipe and strips) and hot rolling process improvement.
He has made many important contributions in his research career. His research on mapping tribo-corrosion processes is highly cited in the literature. During his industrial research career, he carried out development and analysis of microstructures of steels with similar alloying philosophy to HSLA, Dual Phase, TRIP and wear resistant steels, and also carried out technical problem solving in the areas of hot and cold rolling, heat treatment and welding.
Dr Jana has continuing research collaboration with the Tribology Group of the University of Strathclyde, headed by Professor Margaret Stack. During his industrial research career, he also took part in various collaborative research projects funded by the 7th Framework Programme and the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC).
To date Dr Jana has co-authored a book chapter and approximately 20 research papers in the area of tribo-corrosion and metallurgy. He also actively contributes into teaching mainly in the subject areas of welding, corrosion and metallurgy.
