I am Theme Lead for Living Well with Chronic Disease at the Advanced Wellbeing Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Centre, and lead the Health and Disease group in the Biomolecular Sciences Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Centre
About
My research interests include the investigation of the molecular mechanisms underlying conditions such as schizophrenia, neurodegenerative diseases, Long COVID, and ME/CFS. Recent studies based at the BMRC include laboratory-based experiments to investigate the effect of drugs on epigenetic markers in cell models, pharmacogenetic studies aimed at preventing weight-gain in patients taking antipsychotic drugs, and clinical trials of interventions for Long COVID.
At the AWRC, I am involved in a wide range of projects that study physical activity as a therapy to support the management and treatment of chronic conditions such as cancer, frailty, multiple sclerosis, and severe mental illness. Recent projects include the development of methodologies to track symptoms in Long COVID using an app, cognitive function tests, and wearable activity trackers, as well as a community-based co-designed project into the prevention of frailty.

My research interests include the investigation of the molecular mechanisms underlying differential responses to interventions to treat complex conditions such as schizophrenia, depression and obesity. Recent studies include laboratory-based experiments to investigate the effect of drugs at a cellular level, through to community-based projects analysing the individual variability in response to lifestyle interventions aimed at preventing weight-gain in patients taking antipsychotic drugs.

Postgraduate supervision
My current PhD students are studying molecular mechanisms and potential interventions relating to post-viral illnesses. I am also involved in the supervision of PhD students studying topics including Parkinson's disease, metabolic syndrome, pre-habilitation in cancer patients, heart rate variability as a biomarker, and pharmacogenetic testing.
