Carolyn Gail Waudby MA, FHEA
Senior Lecturer in Journalism
Summary
I joined Ï㽶ÊÓƵ after a career in newspaper journalism during which I had two columns in The Sheffield Star and won a Newspaper Society Award for coverage of a flood in northern Pakistan. As a freelance journalist I contributed to national and international magazines. I was key to setting up a magazine pathway on the BA (Honours) in Journalism and PR. I am also widely published as a poet. My research focuses on taking poetry off the page. I am the co-creator of funded by Arts Council England - a multi-media project that explores the legend of Roman god Vulcan and Sheffield steelmaking.
About
Communication with different audiences and the challenges that presents is at the heart of my practice. Whilst studying a BA (Hons) in French Studies I developed an interest in French Surrealist poetry. After graduating, I became a newspaper journalist, specialising in feature writing. A move to Sheffield enabled me to pursue an MA in Writing (Poetry) at Sheffield Hallam and I began my academic career. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and was key to the creation of a magazine pathway on the journalism degree at SHU.
My poetry is published by leading journals and literary magazines. In 2017 I was selected by Eyewear as one of their Best New British and Irish Poets. Apus, a collection of poetry inspired by the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, was published by The Red Ceilings Press in 2020.
I specialise in collaborations with artists. I have staged exhibitions and performances for Off The Shelf Festival and The Festival of the Mind.
I recently collaborated with the artist Diana Scarborough on , a multi-media project that explores the story of Roman god Vulcan and his association with Sheffield steelmaking. Working in partnership with Sheffield Museums and Land of Iron, Cleveland, we developed a new way of storytelling and presented museum collections in a non-traditional way. I wrote the script for a short film at the heart of the project using a poetic narrative and incorporating newly-written poems
The film was launched at Kelham Island Museum, Sheffield, in November 2024 and screened at events in Cleveland and Cambridge.
