Professor of Applied Economic Geography
Summary
Christina is a Professor of Applied Economic Geography in the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Ï㽶ÊÓƵ (CRESR). She is a social statistician by background and has over 30 years’ experience of undertaking applied policy and evidence based research. This includes many national research and evaluation projects utilising large scale data intensive and mixed method approaches to understand the spatial impacts of socio-economic policy initiatives. Christina is especially interested in the intersection of welfare reform, labour market policy, housing policy, and the productivity of industries and places. Her work often highlights the uneven and unintended local consequences of national policy decisions across different types of places or economic contexts in Britain. Her research has a particular focus on older industrial Britain, former coalfield areas, and Britain’s seaside towns.
About
Since joining CRESR in 1992, Christina has built a substantial body of work exploring the spatial dynamics of the intersection of the welfare system, labour market and housing policy. Her research interests include exploring the long-term dynamics of: labour market in particular types of places; the geography of hidden unemployment and economic inactivity; gender differences in economic inactivity and diversions within the benefits system; and the uneven impact of welfare reform. She has been co-applicant for several ESRC grants investigating these issues including: economic inactivity amongst men; the geography in the rise in numbers of women on incapacity-related benefits; labour market adjustment processes in the British Coalfields; and unemployment in Britain's seaside towns.
Christina is currently leading a Review of Supported Housing for the Department of Levelling Up Housing and Communities. She previously led the quantitative research strand for a three-year evaluation of The Impact of the Changes to the Local Housing Allowance System of Housing Benefit for the Department for Work and Pension, and the ten-year evaluation of New Deal for Communities for the Department of Communities and Local Government.
Christina is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Fellow of the Institute of Employability Professionals, a member of the SIPHER Scientific Advisory Board, and a member of Advisory Board for Nuffield Foundation funded project “Unpacking the Disability Employment Gap”.
