Danilo Giglitto

Dr Danilo Giglitto PhD

Associate Lecturer

Summary

I am a researcher and lecturer whose work falls in the areas of heritage studies, media studies, cultural studies, and human-computer interaction. I am concerned with the human experience and understanding of cultural heritage, which I have explored from a variety of angles including bottom-up participation, community-led initiatives, social inclusion, cultural professionals’ needs and expectations, decolonisation, intangible cultural heritage documentation safeguarding, participatory work, and technology co-design. In my work, I adopt multidisciplinary and mixed-methods approaches, and I am well-versed in qualitative methods and research design as well as co-creation activities, academic writing, project evaluation, and project management. I have worked and carried out research for a variety of universities in the UK and overseas.

About

I currently lead several modules in the BA in Media and the MA in Global Communication and Media. At SHU, I last worked on the Polyvocal Interpretation of Contested Colonial Heritage (PICCH) project (2021–2023), which explored how archival material created in a colonial mindset can be re-appropriated and re-interpreted to become an effective source for decolonisation and the basis for a future inclusive society.

From 2018 to 2021, I worked on CultureLabs, a European project aimed at developing novel methodologies and digital tools that may facilitate the organisation and wider deployment of participatory projects around cultural heritage, while focusing on the social inclusion of disadvantaged groups, particularly migrant communities. Before joining Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, I was a Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Associate at Kingston University. I hold a PhD in Sociology from the University of Aberdeen.
