Dr David Claxton BSc(Hons), PGCLT, PhD

Associate Head

Summary

I am an Associate Head in the School of Sport and Physical Activity and provide leadership and guidance on the quality and standards of learning, teaching and assessment. I teach the physiology of sport and exercise on the undergraduate and postgraduate Sport and Exercise Science degree courses. My current interests include endurance training principles, and physiological assessment of sport performance.

About

After graduating from Liverpool Polytechnic, with a 2(1) in Sport and Exercise Science, I worked for 15 years as a physiology technician. I completed my PhD on Oxygen Uptake Kinetics in Children. This research included working closely with the Sheffield Children's Hospital investigating the long-term effects of diaphragmatic hernia repair. Other clinical work includes the evaluation of walking economy in children and young adults with achondroplasia.

I have been teaching in higher education since 2003 and have undertaken the role of Course Leader for three master’s courses: Physical Activity for Health, Sport and Exercise Psychology, and the MSc in Sport and Exercise Science. I am currently an Associate Head and lead on the quality strand of the learning and teaching portfolio within the school to drive quality enhancement and continuous improvement of teaching quality.

I still occasionally compete in duathlon and triathlon events and can be found most weekends running or cycling in the Peak District.

Specialist areas of interest

- Oxygen uptake kinetics

- Good laboratory practice quality assurance and laboratory safety
