Dr Kathy Doherty is Head of Programme Area for Postgraduate Ï㽶ÊÓƵ in C3RI, Chair of the College of Business, Technology and Engineering Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Degrees Committee and Deputy Chair of the University Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Degrees Sub-committee. She is a Social Psychologist whose research interests cover a range of topics and issues in communication, working across the boundaries of social psychology, cultural studies and discourse studies.

About

Her published work includes a book for the Routledge Women and Psychology series 'Accounting for Rape' (co-authored by Irina Anderson) on identity and accountability for sexual violence. This work built on her earlier research (with Geoff Beattie) on the construction of accountability for paramilitary violence and offers an original perspective on accounts for female and male rape, employing critical discourse analysis to provide, '…a timely in-depth critique of contemporary rape supportive culture … destined to make a significant impact on contemporary scholarship on sexual violence'.

Other feminist standpoint research includes analysis of the interactional management of gendered identity and body modification in an online community of dieters (with Kerry McSeveny) and a project that explored sense-making in children's accounts of domestic abuse (with Caroline Dryden, published in the British Journal of Social Psychology). This work employed discourse analysis in an original way to explore individual differences in young boys' management of accountability in the context of social norms constructing masculinity in terms of heroic protection.

Ï㽶ÊÓƵ on online communities (with Daragh O’Reilly) has explored the relationship between the production and consumption of popular music and the factors involved in sustaining a popular music project over a long period of time. Kathy has served on several committees for the British Psychological Society (BPS) including the Psychology Postgraduate Affairs Group, BPS Council, the Scientific Affairs Board, the Standing Conference Committee and as Chair of the Psychology of Women Section Committee.

She has supervised a total of seven PhD students to completion, with a further three due for submission in late 2013. She has supervised a diverse range of PhD topics including research projects on The Gendering of Work and Organization in Sheffield's Cultural Industries Quarter; Governing Employee Health; Discourses of Childhood Sexual Abuse; The Production and Consumption of Popular Music; The Experience and Identities of Gay Dads; The Management of Identity and Accountability in the Weight Watchers Online Community; Jazz, Identity & Community in Cape Bretton Island; The Interactional Management of Software Programming; Body Representations in Performance Art by Arab Female Artists; an examination of the Relation between Subjectivity and Place through Art-Making and most recently, Communication Practices and the Underground Music Scene in Indonesia.
