Dr. Leon Shpanin SMIEEE, FHEA

Senior Lecturer, Electronic and Electrical engineering.


Summary

Dr Shpanin received his MSc degree in Radio Frequency Engineering, at the Azerbaijan Technical University, in 1992 and PhD degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, at the University of Liverpool, in 2006. 

He has over ten years of academic and research experience in the UK in the area of electrical and electronic engineering. Prior to his PhD degree, he also had over ten years of industrial experience in RF communication systems and electronic engineering where he worked in the variety of research, engineer and management positions across the world.


About

Dr Leon Shpanin joined the Centre for Automation and Robotics Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ within Materials and Engineering Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Institute, at the Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ, in August 2018 as a Senior Lecturer in Electronic Engineering. His previous post was in the Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing at the Coventry University where he held a position of a Lecturer in Aerospace Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He is currently the Course Leader for MSc Automation Control and Robotics.

Dr Shpanin has also served as a Senior Teaching Fellow in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, developing a few Applied Engineering Programme modules for the undergraduate students at the University of Warwick. His previous positions also included a Senior Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµer in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Sciences, at the Staffordshire University working on development of HVDC circuit interruptions as well as a Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Fellow in Control and Power Systems in the School of Electronic, Electrical and Computing Engineering at the University of Birmingham where he designed the renewable energy systems. 

Dr Shpanin received his MSc degree in Radio Frequency Engineering at the Azerbaijan Technical University in 1992 and Ph.D. degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Liverpool, UK in 2006. He has over twenty years of industrial and academic experience in electrical, electronic engineering and RF communication systems where he worked in the variety of research, engineering and management positions in the UK and across the world. He holds a reviewer position in the IEEE Journals of Transactions on Plasma Science (USA), Transactions on Mechatronics (USA) and Transactions on Power Delivery (USA), and EPSRC research funds (UK). He is a Fellow in Higher Education Academy and a member of Higher Education Academy and Senior member of IEEE.

In October 2020 Dr Shpanin received the RAEng Award for the work on next-generation circuit breakers for enhanced performance of UK rail networks.
