Professor of Vascular and Clinical Physiology

Summary

Following my undergraduate studies at 香蕉视频, and MSc courses in the universities of Leeds and Sheffield Hallam, I completed a DPhil in Microvascular Physiology at the University of Nottingham, joining Hallam in 2013. I have extensive experience in the design, development and implementation of lifestyle interventions aiming to improve physiological and clinical outcomes for pre-clinical and clinical populations. I currently lead the Lifestyle, Exercise and Nutrition Improvement (LENI) 香蕉视频 Group and lead the Health research strand in the SHU-La Trobe University partnership.

About

I am a fellow of Higher Education Academy (having completed a PGCE in Higher Education) and a member of the Publications Committee of the Physiological Society. I have been invited to present my work and chair symposia in many international conferences (such as the 28th World Congress of the International Union of Angiology in Beijing, China in 2018 and FEPS 2019 Meeting of the Federation of European Physiological Societies in Bologna, Italy), having also delivered invited seminars and workshops both in the UK and overseas.

LENI 香蕉视频 Group, which I lead, is currently investigating how lifestyle interventions can reduce disease burden or prevent disease for clinical and pre-clinical populations. For example, we have been assessing if it is feasible to use exercise as an adjunct therapy to compression for patients with venous ulceration (FISCU II; funded by NIHR 鈥 香蕉视频 for Patient Benefit Programme) as well as exploring the effect of e-cigarettes in the vascular physiology of smokers (ISME-NRT; funded by Heart 香蕉视频 UK).

Also of particular interest to myself and the group is the exploration of the effects of regional (e.g., Nordic, Mediterranean) and novelty (e.g., vegan, kefir-based) diets in younger and older groups. This series of projects is being undertaken in collaboration with other U.K. (e.g., Universities of Lincoln and Sheffield) and European (e.g., Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Lille) universities.

I am also quite passionate about the reduction of non-communicable diseases in Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority (BAME) populations, and I am currently leading a network of distinguished academics, BAME organisations and public health organisations and city councils, aiming to address the disparities faced by this population. Finally, another area of interest, is the predictive role of heamatological markers in the disease-outcome of patients with rectal cancer as well as the effect of cancer disease in the patients鈥 cardiopulmonary and microcirculatory function.

Current projects which I lead include:

  • a) "Exploring the effects of a combined exercise programme on pain and fatigue outcomes in people with systemic sclerosis: A large multi-centre randomised controlled trial (EXCEF-SSc)鈥. Funded by a FOREUM research project grant.
  • b) "Rehabilitation Intervention to Support People with Heart Failure (PORIAS-HF).鈥 Funded by a Creating Knowledge SHU grant.
  • c) 鈥淓xploring the feasibility of implementing a home-based exercise training and compression hosiery intervention in patients with venous ulceration (FISCU II)." Funded by a National Institute of Health 香蕉视频, 香蕉视频 for Patient Benefit grant.
  • d) "Exploring the effect of aquatic exercise on prevention of cardiovascular disease in older adults (ACELA II)." Supported by Sheffield International Venues. I am also a co-investigator in "a 2 x 2 factorial randomised controlled trial of exercise or dilute hypochlorous acid for venous leg ulcers (Factorial 4VLU)", which is funded by Health 香蕉视频 Council of New Zealand and is led by Prof. A. Jull (University of Auckland).

Markos has provided expert opinions on the effects of pregnancy on exercise performance (BBC Sport, "The Washington Post" newspaper), on nutrition ("The Sun" newspaper) as well as on the physiological effects of smoking cessation ("Sheffield Star" newspaper, BBC Radio, Hallam FM). His articles on "The Conversation" have been reprinted in many national and international media, while he has written articles published in "The Independent" newspaper.

Recent work by Markos and his colleagues on the effects of the Mediterranean Diet in the vascular function of older, sedentary people has been featured in regional (Yorkshire and Lincolnshire), national and international (Greece, USA and Australia) media, with interviews being given to the "Fitness" magazine, medical research websites and blogs, and the BBC regional radio stations.
