Michael Charlton
Senior Lecturer
Summary
Michael joined Sheffield Business School in 2011 after a 15 year career in industry. He is a member of the Business Operations and Systems (BOS) subject group and teaches across a range of modules, specialising in operations management, systems thinking, project management and business ethics. Prior to joining the university he was a senior commercial manager in the clothing industry and a project consultant in the public sector. As a commercial manager he project managed a number of successful IT projects including the implementation and development of ERP, CRM and forecasting systems. In the public sector he managed a portfolio of housing capital projects, including a major investment in a flagship housing regeneration scheme.
Michael was educated at the University of Hull receiving a BA (Hons) in Management Systems. He went on to graduate from the University of Nottingham with an MBA (2007). His professional and research interests lie in the development of systems thinking and problem structuring methods (PSMs) to help improve the definition and delivery of successful projects and to aid innovation in services, strategy and information systems deployment. He is interested in how problem structuring methods can be used in planning, consultation and stakeholder involvement. His research focuses on systems thinking for the uninitiated.
