Doctor Nikki Jordan-Mahy BSc, PhD

Summary
Dr. Nikki Jordan-Mahy is an Associate Head, Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Delivery Manager and Principal Lecturer at Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ. She is a graduate of Royal Holloway and Bedford New College at the University of London where she received a BSc Hons degree in Physiology and Zoology. On completion of her degree she undertook her PhD at Cambridge University at the MRC Dunn Nutrition Unit. She has taught in many areas including physiology, anatomy, embryology, pathology, forensic pathology and nutrition. She is a member of the Cancer Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Group and the Tissue engineering Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Group in the Biomolecular Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Centre (BMRC). Nikki supervises a number of PhD students within these two research areas.
About
Nikki is an experiential teacher and has been nominated for the College and University Inspirational Teaching Award in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and won the University Award in 2014, 2015 and 2016. She was awarded the VC Inspirational Teaching Award in 2016.
She has worked in the Department of Biosciences and Chemistry for 25 years, and during this time, she has developed modules and course programs of study for undergraduates and postgraduates. She has planned key roles in the seven BSc/MSci course validation processes, in several successful accreditation from the Royal Society of Biology and Institute of Biomedical Science. Nikki has also been a Course Leader for several degree programs including the BSc/MSci in Biochemistry BSc/MSci Human Biology, BSc Cellular and Molecular Biosciences, BSc Biochemistry and Biotechnology degrees.
She is the Chair of the College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences Biosciences Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Ethics Committee and has been a member of the University Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Ethics Committee for over 20 years. She works with both University and College members to implement and update ethical procedures and policies in the University.
Nikki is a member of the Biomolecular Sciences Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Centre (BMRC) and part of the Cancer and Tissue Engineer Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ groups.
Cancer Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ
Her cancer research focuses on the use of polyphenols in the treatment of cancer, and their impact on standard chemotherapy treatments, this work has lead to many national and international collaborations and number publications.
Other cancer research projects involve the synthesis of novel anti-cancer treatments with a number of collaborators including Dr. Neil Cross and Dr. Alice Johnson at SHU.
Tissue Engineering
Her regenerative medicine research focuses on the development of Novel 3D Cell culture systems for the study of gastrointestinal disease. This research is in collaboration with Prof Christine Le Maitre from Sheffield University and Prof Chris Sammon from MERI.
Further work into epithelial regenerative is also being undertaken in collaboration with Prof Christine Le Maitre from the BMRC and Prof Andrew Alderson from MERI and Prof Prasad Godbole at the Sheffield Children's Hospital.

Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Collaborations
The use of polyphenols in the treatment of leukaemia and their impact on standard chemotherapy treatments. This work is in collaboration with Dr Gordon McDougall from the James Hutton Institute and members of the BMRC.
Other cancer research projects involve the study of metastasis formation research with Dr Nick Peake and Dr Neil Cross, and the modulation of the immune system in the treatment of cancer with Dr Rebecca Leyland.
Investigating the use of Novel 3D Cell culture method for the study and treatments of small intestinal inflammatory disease. This research is in collaboration with Prof Christine Le Maitre from the BMRC and Prof Chris Sammon from MERI. This collaboration has enabled a more materialistic approach to gastrointestinal research.
