Summary
I am the Subject Group Leader for Future Transportation, which covers provision across Aerospace, Automotive and Railway Engineering. My own teaching focuses primarily on materials and manufacturing, while my research is in the field of corrosion and corrosion prevention, I am also active in engineering education research, using this activity to benefit student experience in the Department of Engineering and Maths.
About
I studied Materials Engineering with a Diploma in Industrial Studies in the Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering (IPTME) at Loughborough University. My final year project examined the feasibility of adopting molybdate conversion coatings as chromate replacements, using the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) to study the repassivation of the coatings.
Following graduation, I completed an industrially sponsored PhD project, also at Loughborough University. The aim of the study was to identify nanoparticulate additives which would enhance the performance of waterborne organic coating primers.
I joined Ï㽶ÊÓƵ in 2008, contributing to research, consultancy delivery and regionally-funded projects supporting businesses, predominantly SMEs. To date, I have supervised four PhD students to successful completion, as well as examining a number of Doctoral students, both internally at SHU and externally. I am currently supervising a Knowledge Transfer Partnership project to develop environmentally benign pretreatments for steel, in collaboration with a leading global surface finishing supplier.
Since 2010, I have also been teaching in the Department of Engineering and Mathematics creating, delivering and leading modules for undergraduate and postgraduate students. My teaching role has led to an interest in engineering education research, with projects investigating novel assessment methods, laboratory-based curriculum development and contextualising learning.
With a passion for everything aerospace, I became Course Leader for BSc Aeronautical Engineering in 2012. Since 2017, I have been a Subject Group Leader, initially for Chemical and Materials Engineering and latterly Future Transportation.
I am an active member of the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institute of Materials Finishing.
