Dr Luo is a member of the core consultancy team working within the Materials and Engineering Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ Institute (MERI), having expertise in metallurgy, materials science, surface engineering and tribology. His role includes consultancy, research, and supervising research students.

About

Consultancy

Dr Luo joined the consultancy team in 2007, and has delivered several hundreds of consultancy jobs, with experiences in the following areas

  • characterisation of metallic alloys and ceramics, thin films and coatings, and chemical powders using SEM, TEM, XRD, EDX, and micro/macro hardness
  • measurement of residual stresses of hard coatings and shot-peened surfaces by XRD
  • investigation of engineering materials failures, including fatigue and fracture, metallurgical defects, wear and friction, and corrosion
  • wear and friction properties of metals and ceramics using pin-on-disk tribometer, including high-temperature sliding wear

Teaching

Dr Luo previously delivered teaching courses in several topics, including 'Physical Metallurgy of Engineering Materials', 'Dislocation Theory and Strengthening of Materials', 'Heat treatments of Tool Steels' and 'Tribology of PVD Hard Coatings'.

Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ

His research interests are in three broad areas

  • nano-structured surface engineering to develop materials surfaces of high wear resistance, low friction, and good corrosion resistance
  • novel heat treatment technologies of ultrahigh strength steels and wear resistant steels
  • fundamental research on the wear and friction mechanisms of high-performance coatings and hardened surfaces
  • materials technology for medical and surgical applications

His current research is focused in the following topics

  • novel strengthening/toughening heat treatments of ultrahigh strength steels for large vehicles, being sponsored by Innovate UK and Tinsley Bridge Ltd through Smart Award, Knowledge Transfer Partnership, and PhD studentship
  • failure investigation and development of telescopic rods of in Skeletally Immature Patients with Osteogenesis Imperfect, collaborating with Sheffield Children's Hospital and funded by Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust
  • new bainitic/martensitic wear resistant steels for large metal-cutting blades, sponsored by Knowledge Transfer Partnership (Innovate UK and Tyzack Metal Knives)
  • wear resistance and corrosion properties of plasma nitrided austenitic steel, collaborated with Miba Coatings Group, funded overseas (Nigerian) studentship
  • nanocomposite PVD coatings of superhardness and self-adaptive low friction, collaborated with Guangdong University of Technology and Ningbo Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences
  • innovation in materials characterization techniques, eg cross-sectional TEM and EDX-EELS analyses of hard coatings and surfaces, high-precision XRD residual stress analysis and a new XRD technique to measure the martensite fraction and carbon content of hardened medium-carbon steels

He has wide collaborations with UK industry and with academics worldwide, recently with Miba Coatings Group, Tinsley Bridge Ltd, and Tyzack Metal Knives, and scientists in University of Southampton, Pusan University (Korea), Henan University of Science and Technology (China), Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology (China), Guangdong University of Technology (China), and Ningbo Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
