Ï㽶ÊÓƵ

Reza has worked on the electronics of medical engineering since January 1988. These involved digital signal processing, computer communication, system design and artificial intelligence. The areas for which development he had a leadership role are summarised below.

2014-current: Accelerometry for arthritis and vestibular problems diagnosis

In collaboration with Sheffield Children's Hospital (Consultant, Dr Daniel Hawley), accelerometry techniques are being developed to improve diagnoses of arthritis in children. One of Dr Saatchi's PhD students is also involved in the project. Some of the preliminary findings were reported in a conference proceeding and the team has journal papers currently in preparation. In collaboration with the Vestibular Laboratory at Sheffield Children's Hospital (Collaborator, Dr Samantha Lear), we are also developing accelerometry techniques to better understand balance related problems - a new PhD student has joined this study from October 2016.

2014-current: Artificial intelligence techniques to predict likelihood of survival in trauma injuries

Reza is currently collaborating with to develop new artificial intelligence approaches to predict the likelihood of survival from an injury. For this work, Dr Saatchi is supervising a PhD student as Director of Study, and to date fuzzy logic based approaches were developed that are reported in the student's MPhil/PhD transfer report.

2013-current: Thermal imaging for paediatric monitoring and diagnosing

This study has resulted in image processing techniques (such as facial tracking for respiration monitoring) that bring thermal imaging closer to routine clinical use for monitoring and diagnosis. Reza has already supervised 2 completed PhD studies as Director of Study to develop thermal imaging for noncontact respiration rate monitoring. Two new PhD students have joined the research team to continue this work in October 2016.

2011-current: Vibration analysis to assess bone mineral density

The study has resulted in developments in vibration analysis to assess bone mineral density (BMD). The current gold standard for BMD assessment is dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), but this has shortcomings such as its ineffectiveness for children aged 5 years and younger. Reza has supervised a completed, NHS-funded, PhD study (as Director of Study) in this area and has recently appointed a Post-doctoral researcher to continue the work in collaboration with Sheffield Children's Hospital. In June 2016 the study received funding from the Medical Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Council's Confidence-in-Concept scheme, value £40,514, to further develop and evaluate the approaches. Some of the findings were reported in 2 journals and 4 conference proceedings.

2009-current: Noncontact real-time respiration rate monitoring

The study resulted in new techniques for noncontact respiration rate monitoring. The work has been in collaboration with a number of consultants from Sheffield Children's Hospital (SCH). Some findings were reported in 6 journals and 8 conference proceedings. There were a number of grants, one from the National Institute for Health Ï㽶ÊÓƵ (NIHR), invention for Innovation (i4i) scheme (grant reference number: II-LB-0712-20004), value £177,585 (co-applicant). Reza has two patents (GB 2480605 and WO 2011148159) in this area. So far, Reza has supervised 2 PhD studies to completion (as Director of Study) and 2 new PhD students will be continuing the work. There were a number of design prizes, including one from the Medipex and another from the IET. Some thermal imaging aspects of this work overlap with Reza's work on thermal imaging for paediatric study.

2005-current: Wireless transmission quality of service assessment and improvement

The study has resulted in artificial intelligent methods, primarily fuzzy logic and neural computing to quantify how well hybrid (wired and wireless) networks transfer multimedia (i.e. quality of service assessment) and the manner this information can be used to improve the network's performance. Reza has supervised as Director of Studies 3 completed PhDs and an MPhil for this work. Some of the findings were reported in 5 journals, 2 book chapters and 17 conference proceedings. Dr Saatchi is currently supervising a PhD student (as Director of Study) sponsored by SHU Vice Chancellor's award to deploy some of the developed techniques in clinical settings in collaboration with Sheffield Children's Hospital.

1988-2005: EEG and ECG signal processing in brain related disorders

The study has resulted in signal processing (such as signal source separation, wavelet transform) and artificial intelligent (such as fuzzy logic and neural computing) methods to interpret electroencephalogram (EEG) for a number of brain related disorders (schizophrenia, Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease) and in saccade. Dr Saatchi also investigated electrocardiogram (ECG) components to detect hypoglycaemia-induced cardiac arrhythmias. There were 2 completed PhD studies in this area. The work had several external collaborators that included: Sheffield University, Royal Hallamshire Hospital (Sheffield), Plymouth Hospital and the Salk Institute (San Diego, USA). One of the publications related to the project, received the highly prestigious IET Premium and EUREL prizes. Some of the findings were reported in 12 journals and 22 conference proceedings. He currently co-supervises a PhD student registered at Northumbria University to design an optical EEG recording system.

A funding from Ï㽶ÊÓƵ (Imagine Connect scheme, value £13,500) and a grant from Sheffield Children's Hospital (value £16,500) were received in support of this work to further develop thermal imaging in paediatric health care. Dr Saatchi's main role has been to guide the image processing developments needed to analyse and interpret the data. These ongoing studies are

'Development of a high-resolution infrared thermographic imaging method as a diagnostic tool for acute undifferentiated limp in young children'. A study was successfully carried out by a BMedSci student from Sheffield University, June 2015-July 2016. Medical collaborator: Dr Shammi Ramlakhan (consultant in emergency medicine) from SCH. This is being written up as a journal paper.

Contributions to other studies

Development of techniques for 3-dimensional ultrasound scanning to diagnose breast cancer in women. A completed PhD study supervised by Dr Saatchi. Some of the study's findings were reported in a journal paper.

Development of techniques for 3-dimensional object scanning. A completed PhD study supervised by Dr Saatchi. Some of the study's findings were reported in 4 conference proceedings.

Image processing techniques to improve monitoring of cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is a recessive genetic condition that causes dehydration and production of thick secretions in many affected organs, most notably the lungs. These affect the size of the lungs’ air vessels. Dr Saatchi supervised a completed PhD as Director of Study that developed image processing to assist monitoring of CF by quantifying the dimensions of the air vessels in CT scans. The method was clinically evaluated at Sheffield Children's Hospital.
