Dr Richard Telling is an Associate Head at Sheffield Business School – home to over 5,500 students. Richard provides leadership for the Student Experience portfolio, driving the School’s approach to community development, societies and enrichment, academic advising, continuation, student voice, and induction. His research interests align with his leadership role and he has disseminated his work on student voices and belonging at conferences nationally.

About

Dr Richard Telling is an Associate Head within Sheffield Business School – home to over 5,500 students. Richard provides leadership for the Student Experience portfolio, driving the school’s approach to community development, societies and enrichment, academic advising, continuation, student voice, and induction. Richard is well placed to carry out this role having spent the previous 18 months as Principal Lecturer for Student Experience for the Department of Service Sector Management.

Richard joined Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ in 2013 with a decade’s experience working in the restaurant sector across pubs, casual dining chains and independent restaurants. He has taught numerous modules in hospitality and tourism management, notably the consultancy module which provides final year students with a client-led experience and exemplifies Hallam’s commitment to applied and ‘real-world’ learning. Richard has acted as an external panel member at numerous validation events and has served as External Examiner at Queen Margaret University and University of Wales Trinity St David.

For his PhD, Richard explored adolescent work within a family business context and how this impacts parent-child relationships and career decision making. His work has been published in the Journal of Family Business Management, and Hospitality and Society. Richard currently supervises a PhD student researching food waste within the restaurant sector. More recently, his research interests align with his leadership role and he has disseminated his work on student voices and belonging at conferences nationally.

Richard serves as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and was winner of the Outstanding Academic Adviser Award 2023.
