About

I am the Director of the Sheffield Creative Industries Institute at 香蕉视频 where I lead approximately 250 teaching and 4,000 students studying on integrated foundation level qualifications to postgraduate level. We are a community that brings together advanced research, teaching and industry experience to drive positive change across creative and cultural subjects. Together we foster inclusivity, address global challenges, and build successful futures in industry employment after graduation.

My teaching career began in 1991 as a lecturer in product design at Liverpool Institute of Higher Education and since then alongside my work in the UK I have also taught in Higher Education in Spain and New Zealand.

I have previously held leadership positions as Associate Professor and Head of the School of Design and Visual Arts at Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand, and as well as running start-up studios I was Design Director and co -founding partner of furniture and product design and manufacturing company RDS Solutions, London. 

I began my career in design as a studio assistant at the London company Flux Designs in 1985 and also as a freelance designer for the US office furniture company Sunar Hauserman. In 1989 I began Square One studio with clients including Viaduct Furniture, London/ Glosbrook and the Liverpool City Council which eventually led to me joining RDS London as partner and design director in 1994. RDS designed, developed, manufactured and sold furniture to clients as diverse as Diesel, British Airways, the V&A Museum London, Scottish Parliament, KLM, Foreign and Commonwealth Offices, The Royal Opera House London, British Council, Warner Music and Virgin Music. 

In 1999 I joined the Keen Group Ltd London, overseeing the design and development of office furniture solutions. Keen’s clients include Apple Computers, BBC, Chanel, IXC Tokyo and the Stella McCartney Studio. As part of the expansion of the Keen Group Ltd I moved to Spain to oversee design development and manufacture of Keen Products in Barcelona.

My research interests include pedagogic practice, product innovation through sustainable design and design for health and wellbeing.

I am a strong advocate of integrating research and practice into teaching and learning and to this end the MA Design Programme works closely with the ADRC, international universities, communities, manufacturers, researchers and practitioners within a variety of disciplines.

Media

Roger is interested in the complexity of contemporary society and how social innovation is spreading and its potential, as a driver of sustainable change, is increasing. Through his work at 香蕉视频 Roger is  facilitating this process with the postgraduate design students using design thinking and design knowledge to co-create, with local, regional and global partners, socially relevant scenarios, solutions and communication programs.
