Summary
Dr Stephen Green is a Senior Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Fellow at CRESR. He specialises in housing policy and practice, and is particularly interested in the function and operation of the Private Rented Sector (PRS) in the UK. In recent years this has included a focus on the impact of changes to the welfare state and access to the PRS by low-income and marginalised groups. Steve also has an expanding research interest in how local authorities and voluntary organisations provide 'early intervention' housing, health and social support to residents.
About
Steve's work usually involves mixed methods, but he has particular expertise and experience in qualitative research and analysis with vulnerable and 'harder to reach' groups, and professionals working in housing, health and social care. Techniques adopted include qualitative longitudinal research, in-depth interviewing, focus groups, participant observation and computer-aided qualitative data analysis (using Nvivo).
In the past twelve years, Steve has carried out contract and academic research for a broad range of clients - local authorities, government departments, charities and housing associations. These include the Welsh Government, Department for Work and Pensions, Department of Communities and Local Government, Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Stoke on Trent City Council and the housing organisation, Places for People.
Steve is currently managing a major three year evaluation of Stoke on Trent City Council's Cooperative Working Model - a new keyworker-based approach to providing health, housing and social services in the city supported by the Government's Transformation Challenge Award. He is also involved in an evaluation of a programme run by British Red Cross - First Call - which aims to support older people facing physical health and emotional difficulties. Also, he is carrying out research for Crisis on issues of access to the private rented sector by homeless people and housing benefit claimants.
