Dr Anthony Bell
Senior X-Ray Technician
Summary
Tony Bell graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BSc in Chemistry in 1984. He went on to specialise in synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and solid-state chemistry. He subsequently gained an MSc in Chemistry from the University of Keele in 1992 and then a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge in 1999.
He returned to Sheffield in September 2015. He now runs the MERI X-Ray laboratory and is responsible for two X-Ray powder diffractometers and one X-Ray fluorescence spectrometer.
About
Tony discovered X-Ray diffraction in his final year at the University of Sheffield. His first job was doing X-Ray powder diffraction with AEA Technology near Preston (1985-90). He then returned to academia, working at the Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source (1990-1995) before studying for his PhD in solid state chemistry at Cambridge as a mature student.
After Cambridge he had postdocs in Montpellier (France), Oxford and Manchester before returning to Daresbury in 2005. After the closure of the Daresbury SRS in 2008 he went to work on the DORIS synchrotron in Hamburg, Germany 2009-2012. Returning to the UK he worked as an X-Ray powder diffraction and SEM experimental officer at Newcastle University.
Now at Hallam he runs the X-Ray laboratory and is responsible for two X-Ray powder diffractometers (XRD) and one X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer.
Tony is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC, C.Chem) and the British Crystallographic Association.
As senior X-Ray technician Tony is responsible for the safe operation of the three X-ray sets in MERI, two for XRD and one XRF. He is also a Radiation Protection Supervisor for MERI. Tony assists MERI staff and students with analyses of XRD and XRF data collected on their samples.
Tony's specialist area of interest is in structural chemistry of minerals.

Part of the organizing committee of the British Crystallographic Association (BCA) Industrial Group annual XRF meeting, which was held at SHU on 13th June 2018. At this meeting Tony was elected chair of the BCA Industrial Group XRF committee for the next 3 years.
