Go Racing in Yorkshire commissioned The Centre for Regional Economic and Social Ï㽶ÊÓƵ (CRESR) at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ to provide an economic impact of horseracing in Yorkshire.
The objectives of the study are:
- to provide an overview of the demand for racing, including detailing racecourse attendances and their trends
- to calculate the economic impact of the horseracing industry:
- this is measured in terms of expenditure, employment and gross value added
- it includes both the direct and indirect impact: it will measure the economic activity stimulated by the day-to-day activities of the horseracing industry as well as flows through the local economy to create additional activity in other sectors and industries
- it will consider all the main participants in the industry: the racecourses, training, the owners, betting
- the study also considers non-racing activity at racecourses such as conferences, banquets, weddings etc
- to estimate the tax contribution arising from horse racing: employment taxes, VAT, Gross Profits Tax
- where possible compare these metrics against other sports and industries.
