"I'm not just learning—I'm making a difference."
Iqra Javid is studying our Digital User Experience (UX) apprenticeship and working at National Highways in the service operations team. Her role focuses on improving IT systems and applications to create better user experiences, allowing her to gain hands-on experience while earning a qualification.
“While completing a Level 4 marketing apprenticeship, I debated between university and a degree apprenticeship and ultimately chose the latter to continue earning while learning. My previous apprenticeship provided valuable corporate experience, helping me build skills and confidence for a smooth transition into a new role.
“I only discovered the apprenticeship two days before the deadline. So, I applied and to my surprise I got the role. Now, I get practical experience in a supportive environment while studying for my degree.
“In my role as a digital UX apprentice, I collaborate with UX researchers and service designers to improve IT systems and applications. I help shape internal digital services to make them more efficient and user-friendly.
“Some of my key projects include HART (Highways Agency Reporting Tool), where I helped facilitate workshops, conducted user research, and compiled a report that influenced key decisions. I also worked on the Ways of Working (WOW) Project, where I interviewed colleagues to understand system frustrations and developed resources to improve efficiency. In addition, I engage with stakeholders across the business, using research and data to support decision making.
“My apprenticeship has helped me build confidence and develop essential UX skills, from problem solving to stakeholder engagement. I’ve had the opportunity to lead meetings and facilitate workshops – all things I never imagined doing before. Looking ahead, I aspire to become a highly skilled UX professional and, eventually, take on a leadership role where I can mentor others. The hands-on experience I’m gaining now is preparing me for that future.
“One of the best things about my apprenticeship is knowing that my work contributes to real projects that improve National Highways’ digital services. By combining my studies with practical experience I’m not just learning, I’m making a difference. I also want to help others discover the benefits of apprenticeships. I’ve written a blog about my journey, shared advice on LinkedIn, and I’m planning to speak at a college in Huddersfield to inspire students to consider degree apprenticeships.
“If you’re thinking about an apprenticeship but aren’t sure whether to take the leap, my advice is to go for it! With curiosity, determination, and the right support, you can successfully transition into a new industry and thrive.”
