Obstetric Ultrasound Practice




Introduction
This module aims to provide the theoretical underpinning that supports and complements your practical training necessary to achieve competency in patient centred obstetric ultrasound practice.
Please note, this module runs alongside our 'Applied physics of ultrasound for safe practice' module.
Who the module is aimed at
The module is aimed primarily at Radiographers, Nurses, Midwives and Medics.

The module will develop the skills and competencies required for advanced obstetric ultrasound clinical practice.
What you learn
You will develop an in depth knowledge of the role of ultrasound, including its limitations, in the demonstration of normal and abnormal fetal anatomy and environment throughout pregnancy.

- physiology of pregnancy and embryological development
- normal and abnormal foetal anatomy and biometry in all states of pregnancy
- antenatal screening
- role of Doppler in obstetric ultrasound
- communication and report writing
- ethical and professional issues in delivering patient centred antenatal care.

Professional recognition
At the time of writing, this course is accredited by Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education. It is due for periodic, routine review in 2025; the accreditation status therefore may be subject to change. You will be notified ahead of enrolment if there is any change to the status of the accreditation.

Entry requirements
- Relevant professional qualification
- Relevant work experience
- Relevant workplace opportunities and organisation support
- You must have access to 14 hours per week ultrasound scanning with an appropriately qualified clinical supervisor (this is not provided by the University).
As part of your application, you are required to complete a clinical agreement form which includes details of your employing NHS Trust and confirmed arrangements for clinical supervision, including details of an appropriately qualified clinical supervisor.
The above must be evidenced in your application form.
