UK passport control
When you arrive at the airport in the UK, head to passport control.
If you’re from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, or the USA and staying for over 6 months, you can use the automated eGates.
If you’re a short-term student (up to 6 months) or from a country not listed above, you must see an officer to get a passport stamp. This stamp gives you the permissions needed for your studies. To assist with this, download and present the to a Border Force Officer. It can be shown either printed or on a mobile device.
Travelling from UK airports
We recommend booking your travel from the airport to Sheffield in advance as prices can vary greatly. Visit for coach services and for train services to get current information on times and fares.
How to get to Sheffield from UK airports:
Manchester airport
If you’re arriving at Manchester Airport, we may be able to pick you up. Please check the Manchester airport pickup service page for more details.
Birmingham airport
- Coach: take the to Sheffield, changing in Birmingham City Centre (it costs from £11 and takes about 4 hours).
- Train: you can take a train and change at Birmingham New Street. Prices vary greatly (£20–£50) so we recommend booking in advance.
- Taxi: not advisable due to high cost.
Gatwick airport
- Coach: you can take the to Sheffield, changing at London Victoria. It costs from £17 for a 7–8 hour journey.
- Train: take the Thameslink train to St Pancras International (the direct route costs from £12 and takes about an hour), then take a direct train to Sheffield.
Leeds Bradford International airport
- Bus and train: take the (costs about £5), then a train to Sheffield (costs from £5 and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes).
- Taxi: a taxi will cost approximately £65.
Liverpool John Lennon airport
- Bus and train: take the 80A or 500 bus to (costs about £5) and then a train to Sheffield (costs from £10 and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes).
- Taxi: not advisable due to high cost.
London Heathrow airport
- Coach: it’s easiest to take a coach to Sheffield. The direct route costs from £23 and takes 4–6 hours.
- Train: take the London Underground Piccadilly Line to King’s Cross St Pancras and follow the signs to St Pancras International. From here you can get a train direct to Sheffield.
London Stansted airport
- Coach: take the to Sheffield, changing at Coventry, London or Milton Keynes (costs from £32 and takes around 5 hours).
- Train: Possible but complicated and expensive. Visit for current information on train times and fares.
- Taxi: not advisable due to high cost.
Nottingham East Midlands airport
- Bus and train: take the (costs from £7.10) and then a train to Sheffield (costs from £4 and takes 30 minutes).
- Taxi: a taxi will cost approximately £60.
Other UK airports
You can often get cheaper flights to some of the smaller airports near Sheffield. However, it may be more difficult and expensive to travel from these airports to Sheffield, and your total travel costs may be more than paying for a more expensive flight to Manchester. Please read the information above before booking your flight.
